Dr. Erwin's Theoretical Approach
Because you will be putting a good deal of time, money, and energy into
therapy, you should choose a counselor carefully. You should feel comfortable with the counselor you choose, and hopeful about counseling. When you feel
this way, counseling is more likely to be very helpful to you.

Dr. Erwin's theoretical approach is based on Empowerment Feminist Therapy
or EFT.  The most central ideas in her work are:

Personal and Social Identities are Interdependent
This means that you will discuss all parts of your identity including your
gender, age, culture, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, family, friends,
work, sexual orientation, and religious or spiritual beliefs.  This will help
Dr. Erwin understand you and how you experience your life.

The Personal is Political
This means that Dr. Erwin will allow for the possibility that social and political
factors may contribute to the cause of your problems.

Relationships are Egalitarian
This means that Dr. Erwin works collaboratively with her clients.  She works to
demystify the counseling process and build on your personal strengths and
assets.

Client’s Perspectives are Valued
This means that Dr. Erwin will validate your lived experiences and encourage
you to value and trust your own inner wisdom.
